Gayatri Mantra

A great significance is bestowed upon Gayatri Mantra in Vedic spheres. It is the oldest and highly revered mantra from Rig Veda. It is addressed to the Immanent and Superior Divine which has also been given the name ‘Savita,’ meaning ‘that from which all this is born.’

Made up of 24 syllables,  Gayatri Mantra is considered to have three parts;

(i) Adoration (ii) Meditation (iii) Prayer. 

Let’s understand the mantra.

Om bhur bhuvah svah
Tat-savitur varenyam
bhargo devasya deemahi
dhiyo yo-nah prachodayaat

Meaning:

हे प्रभु, क्रिपा करके हमारी बुद्धि को उजाला प्रदान कीजिये और हमें धर्म का सही रास्ता दिखाईये.

यह मंत्र सूर्य देवता के लिये प्रार्थना रूप से भी माना जाता है.

We meditate on that most adored Supreme Lord, the creator, whose effulgence (divine light) illumines all realms (physical, mental and spiritual). May this divine light illuminate our intellect and dispel darkness.

Word to word translation:

ॐ = प्रणव
भूर = मनुष्य को प्राण प्रदाण करने वाला
भुवः = दुख़ों का नाश करने वाला
स्वः = सुख़ प्रदाण करने वाला
तत = वह
सवितुर = सूर्य की भांति उज्जवल
वरेण- ्यं = सबसे उत्तम
भर्गो- = कर्मों का उद्धार करने वाला
देवस्य- = प्रभु
धीमहि- = आत्म चिंतन के योग्य (ध्यान)
धियो = बुद्धि
यो = जो
नः = हमारी
प्रचो- दयात् = हमें शक्ति दें

Om: The primeval sound; 

Bhur: the physical body/physical realm; 

Bhuvah: the life force/the mental realm 

Svah: the soul/spiritual realm; 

Tat:  That (God); 

Savitur: the Sun, Creator (source of all life); 

Vareñyam: adore; 

Bhargo: effulgence (divine light); 

Devasya: supreme Lord; 

Dhīmahi: meditate; 

Dhiyo: the intellect; 

Yo: May this light; 

Nah: our; 

Prachodayāt: illumine/inspire.

Benefits of chanting Gayatri manra:

The regular recitation of the mantra, or any mantra for that matter combined with meditation and yoga can elevate and elate us. Anything is possible for a fit mind and a healthy body. Recent AIIMS research revealed that mantras are meaningful linguistic instruments for minds.
